This is a painting of lovers taking a midnight swim. It’s layers of acrylic on handmade paper made from newspapers. I got it framed and matted and I just love it! Painting is 8×10 in a 11×14 frame. Wired and ready to hang. $100.
What a great week with Caroline Jasper at Venus Art Studios in Palm Desert. Caroline is a color expert and this is the second time I have taken her workshop and it won’t be the last. I have a good grasp on color so this week for me was all about exploring ways to create the illusion of depth in my work. I completed 5 works this week, spending half of the last day making slight changes to the first four. I feel I have a much better grasp on creating perspective in my work. What I learned and wasn’t expecting to is how to be more critical of my own artwork. And I don’t mean a general “I don’t like this” or “I fail”, but a gentler “this isn’t working yet” and a more specific critic of why. By the end of the second day some things were not working, and Jasper was excellent at suggestions that worked. By the end of the 5th day, I was finding the things that could be improved myself, and figuring out how to improve them. I am excited to spend some long hours in the studio next week.
Loving this workshop. Today was more emphasis on creating the illusion of Depth.
I am taking a 5 day workshop in Palm Desert, with Caroline Jasper, who I consider my color mentor. She does primarily landscapes, so I probably will wind up doing one or two this week, but today I got to cheat and sneak in painting a girl. Color already is my thing and I would hesitate to take a workshop in color from anyone but Caroline, but in my mind she is a bit of a color god.
Today I focused on value, and the main lesson I am taking home from her today, and hope to apply to my work in the future is that value is just as important, or maybe even more so, as color.
